F1 | Antonelli like Trulli, encouraging data for the Italian driver

Antonelli compared to Verstappen and Jarno Trulli: an Italian driver hasn't held second place in the World Championship in over 20 years.

The second Formula 1 season of Kimi Antonelli has opened with extremely encouraging signs. The young Mercedes driver has indeed started the championship with a competitive pace and great consistency, results that have quickly brought him to the very top positions of the world standings.

After the first races of the season, Antonelli holds second place in the drivers’ world championship, behind teammate George Russell. A start to the championship that confirms not only Mercedes’ competitiveness but also the growth of the Italian driver after his debut year in the category.

The most significant data, however, concerns his age: 19 years and 195 days. With this result, Antonelli has become the youngest driver in Formula 1 history to hold second position in the world championship, a record that highlights the extraordinary precocity of the talent from Emilia.

Antonelli’s comparison (in numbers) with Verstappen in F1

The record gains even more value when compared to that of Max Verstappen, often considered the benchmark among the most precocious drivers in recent Formula 1 history.

In 2017, after the Chinese GP, Verstappen was third in the world championship at 19 years and 191 days. Antonelli, despite a difference of only a few days in age, managed to push even higher in the general standings, reaching second position.

This data highlights how quickly the Italian has managed to establish himself among the category’s protagonists, in a competitive context where experience continues to be a determining factor.

Italy returns to the top positions of the world championship

Antonelli’s placement takes on a special meaning from a historical perspective for Italian motorsport as well. It had been twenty years since an Italian driver was second in the Formula 1 world championship standings.

The last one to achieve this was Jarno Trulli in 2005, when after the European GP he held second position in the championship with Toyota.

Since then, no Italian driver had managed to consistently return to the very top positions of the world standings. Antonelli’s start to the season therefore also represents an important signal for Italy’s return to the top of Formula 1.

A strong signal for Mercedes as well

Antonelli’s excellent start comes at a crucial moment for Mercedes as well. After some more difficult seasons compared to the dominant cycle of the hybrid era, the Brackley team seems to have regained competitiveness with the new car.

In this context, the growth of the young Italian becomes a strategic element for the team’s future: the ability to achieve significant results as early as the first races of the season demonstrates a sporting maturity beyond his years.

If this trend continues, Antonelli could become one of the protagonists in the title fight during the season, continuing to write significant pages in the recent history of Italian Formula 1.
